Most rock chips and many cracks can be repaired.

The following are a few simple guidelines to help you know whether or not your windshield is repairable.

  • If you have rock chip that is less than the size of a toonie, it can likely be repaired
  • If you have a crack that is less than 8 inches in length, it can likely be repaired with our full warranty
  • Damage that you can feel from the inside of your vehicle cannot be repaired
  • Chips or cracks on top of vehicle sensors or cameras should not be repaired. If you have these features, they will be behind your rear view mirror

 How a windshield is repaired:

Repair Step 1

We inspect your windshield and identify any damaged area(s).  This prevents a small or hidden rock chip from being missed and causing you problems later.

Using a specialized scribe tool, we remove any surface debris. Allowing clean access to the rock chip or crack being repaired.

If it is required by the type of damage, we will also use a fine tipped tungsten carbide drill bit to access the center of the break.

Repair Step 2

We mount a specialized windshield repair bridge to your glass directly over the damage.

The bridge is then used to ‘vacuum’ out the air inside the break. This negative pressure both prevents air bubbles later in the repair and opens up space for the repair fluid – resin in step 3.

Repair Step 3

Now that the damage is free of debris and under negative pressure, we inject a high bond strength acrylic resin.

This process involves reversing the repair bridge to gently push the resin into the break.

Step 2 and 3 are then repeated – alternating vacuum and pressure cycles as required to remove air and fully penetrate with resin.

Repair Step 4

Once the rock chip or crack is entirely filled, it is covered with a viscous pit filling resin and a finishing film is applied.

These are then exposed to concentrated ultraviolet (UV) light using a specialized lamp. The UV reacts with the repair resin solidifying it and permanently adhering it to the glass inside the break.

Repair Step 5

Once the rock chip and pit resins have completely cured, the excess is removed. This is done by generously applying our foaming glass cleaner and using a single straight edge razor blade. It is important that this step be done properly to ensure the pit integrity is maintained and that the final surface is perfectly smooth with the rest of your windshield.

On repairs with larger surface damage, we will also buff with ‘pit polish’ which reduces the visibility of the exterior ‘pit’ of the repair.
